Counter-offers are soon to be a thing of the past!


In order to survive (and thrive), most employers have slowly come to the realization that their People are their most precious commodity.  Look around – even companies with the stingiest of reputations and cultures are changing.  Wall Street firms are now allowing their folks to dress casually (JPMorgan Chase).  More employers are now offering benefits that previously would have been unheard of: unlimited vacation time, free food and beverages, spot bonuses, the ability to work from home, flexible work schedules, full service fitness centers, break rooms with games, use of a corporate condo, etc.

Some are even doing away with incentive compensation.  They believe that when they hire the best possible employee, the results will speak for themselves.  They believe that their employees should not have to wait until the end of the year to cash in on what they’ve earned.  Instead, they are building the additional comp into base salaries (see the infamous Valve Handbook for New Employees here).

The point is, leverage is now on the side of the employee (assuming they are stellar).  Employers must adapt to compete. Soon, they will be offering everything that they can afford to and if someone resigns it won’t be because they were cheap.

Earn your value, go above and beyond.  If you don’t feel that you are getting what you deserve then have the guts to go ask for it.  Period.  But you must be prepared to walk away if you don’t get it.  If you are great at what you do, there will be many other firms willing to give you what your employer will not.
