3 Steps to Take When Hiring a Recruiter

Thinking of taking on a staffing partner? Don’t agree to anything until you’ve taken the following three steps:

  1. Look Into Their Background and History: Investigate the firm prior to hiring them. Research the amount of time they’ve been in the industry, learn their specialties, determine their reach and see how much experience they really have in your space.
  2. Ask For References: Great recruiters have excellent relationships with their clients and candidates, so they’re more than willing to offer up references. Review their Linked In profile – if you don’t see any relevant references (read: Hiring Managers in your specialty or HR partners) – run for the hills!  References should provide you a first-hand look at what it’s really like to work with them.
  3. Ask About Their Last Five Placements: Successful staffing agencies take pride in their placements. They’re more than willing to tell you about the recent work they’ve done for clients, because let’s face it, they know they’re good. Consider it a red flag if a recruiter has a difficult time remembering their last five placements or seems uncomfortable talking about them, as that’s just not normal.

When you do find a great recruiter, take the time to build a lasting relationship. Having a strong rapport with your recruiter is invaluable, as it ensures they know your company, culture, background and needs. This will help them to recruit the best possible candidates for your company each time a new position opens up.
